Documents relating to the Iraq Fatality Investigations (IFI), a judicial inquiry into alleged unlawful killings in Iraq by British forces.
IFI was established in 2014 following a High Court ruling that investigations into alleged unlawful deaths needed to be not only detailed and wide-reaching, but also accessible to the families of the victims and the wider public. The court found that investigations by the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT), the service police investigation, did not meet this legal requirement, and the IFI was established in response.
In contrast to IHAT’s focus on establishing possible criminal culpability, IFI investigations are focused on establishing a narrative account of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of individual Iraqis, addressing any relevant issues or criticisms, and making recommendations. While IHAT was closed in 2017, the IFI continues its investigations. As of 2025, eight investigations have been concluded.
This collection includes all final reports, hearing transcripts, and witness statements in relation to IFI investigations, as well as a range of correspondence between IFI and other bodies and evidence submitted by the Ministry of Defence in each case.
