Collection:

Iraq litigation

Documents relating to legal cases arising from the UK’s war in Iraq.

Britain’s war in Iraq generated a multitude of legal cases relating to alleged unlawful killings and ill-treatment of Iraqi civilians and detainees by UK forces. This collection assembles documents relating to this litigation, from British courts to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Cases include judicial review proceedings which challenged the independence and effectiveness of existing investigations into alleged unlawful killing and ill-treatment, courts martial for individual soldiers, and civil claims cases seeking redress.

This litigation created significant precedents for UK military accountability, human rights law, and government policy and practice. This collection brings together skeleton arguments, judgments and orders from across these cases.
