Service Police Legacy Investigations

Documents relating to the Service Police Legacy Investigations (SPLI), an investigative body that examined allegations by Iraqi civilians of serious criminal behaviour by British forces.

SPLI was founded in February 2017 to investigate cases which had not been concluded by the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT). The SPLI was able to open new investigations where they became aware of new allegations, although the vast majority of their caseload of 1,291 allegations were inherited from IHAT.

It was anticipated that the SPLI would complete most of their investigations by the end of 2018 and, unlike its predecessor, the team made quick progress. Within its first six months it had completed inquiries into 52 per cent of the allegations it had received from IHAT. By the end of its first year, it had closed 88 per cent. However, very little information was published on the reasoning behind these closures. The SPLI completed its investigations by the end of 2020, and officially closed down the following year. A handful of individuals were referred to the Services Prosecuting Authority, but no charges were laid.

This collection includes all public update reports from the SPLI, overview documents, and tables monitoring its progress.
