The world’s largest public collection of documents relating to the use of rendition, secret detention and torture by US and UK intelligence agencies in the ‘war on terror’ and beyond.
Building on our earlier work with The Rendition Project, this growing archive brings together hundreds of documents relating to the extensive use of rendition, secret detention and torture by US and UK intelligence agencies in the ‘War on Terror’ and beyond. The archive contains a significant tranche of material relating to the Central Intelligence Agency’s Rendition, Detention and Interrogation (RDI) programme, which ran between 2001-09. This includes hundreds of CIA cables and memos from within the programme, first-hand accounts from former CIA prisoners, the so-called ‘torture memos’ from the US Department of Justice which purported to authorise the use of ‘enhanced interrogation’, and documents relating to the companies and aircraft involved in transferring prisoners within the CIA’s network of secret prisons.
The archive also contains documents relating to UK involvement in rendition, secret detention and torture, including through providing support to the CIA’s RDI programme between 2001-09, as well as more recent intelligence sharing practices in cases where detainees have been subjected to a real risk of torture.
